Defender Onyekachi Akakem is among the list of VFC players who have mutually terminated their contracts with VFC.

The 2017 Federations Cup winner's contract was billed to run out by the end of this season, but also agreed to end it few months earlier.

Akakem featured more prominently in his first season at the club  (2019/2020), making two competitive appearances, in addition to numerous friendly outings. He however couldn't tie down a competitive shirt this season due to injuries.

A leader on and off the pitch, Akakem was named the first vice-captain and later, the second-ever captain of the Lions in November 2020, taking over from Thompson Emmanuel who left the club after the expiration of his contract that same month.

"I am proud to have worn the VFC badge. This would always be home to me. I wish the management and players success." Akakem told vandrezzerfc.com.

Team Manager Fatai Olayinka had this to say about the experienced defender :

"Akakem is one of those people you'll love to work with. He made my job easier by properly coordinating his teammates every time. Even after his contract was mutually terminated, he was willing to stay back in the club to help build the younger players. He will forever remain a legend of the club."

We wish "Kachi"' all the best in his future endeavours.
