Defender Bassey Odiong will miss his very first match of the 2022 NNL season, after being ruled out of action for two weeks with a thigh injury.
The rock solid defender who is the only VFC player to start all eleven matches so far this season, was replaced by Opara Abraham in the 60th minute of Sunday's Week 9 clash against Ekiti United, following a collusion with Ekiti attacker Tinuwase Ayonda at the edge of the VFC box.
Bassey had previously gone down after clashing with another player from the home side, Richard Appor, but continued playing until the second incident, which forced him to call for his substitution.
*The center-back who has been on the sidelines since Sunday, was reassessed on Thursday, and ruled out for a further two weeks.*
Apart from missing Friday's home game against Campos FC, 'Oracle' who has been impressive for us so far this season, will also not be available for the away game versus Giant Brillars in Enugu, the last match before mid-season break.
"I feel very disappointed to be unable to play. I have not sat out any game this season and so it will feel strange watching and not playing at least the next two games. All the same, I will be encouraging the other defenders to fight for the team like they have always done. I wish us success in the coming games" said the former FC One Rockets captain who joined VFC last December.
In Bassey's absence, coach Henry Makinwa has options of captain Godwin Ekpo, Opara Abraham and Ibrahim Owolobi to start in central defence.
Meanwhile attacker Somtochukwu Abraham and midfielder Saheed Obisesan are nearing full recovery and were seen doing light training today.
Somto has struggled with a recurring ankle problem which has seen him off and on this season, featuring in just five games, and yet to get a goal for the Lions.. Obisesan went down to malaria after only his fourth appearance this season, the 3-0 win on March 11 against Adoration FC where he gave an assist to Saviour Isaac’s goal of the month.
Both players are not fit for selection in the Matchday squad for this Friday, but could hopefully be ready for next weekend’s away game versus Giant Brillars in Enugu.
We wish them full recovery!
