GATEWAY UNITED 1-0 VANDREZZER FC

A difficult afternoon in a terrible pitch at the MKO Abiola Stadium, saw Vandrezzer FC drop all three points against for the first time this season, as the Lions were pipped 1-0 by hosts Gateway United.

Coach Henry Makinwa made three changes to the starting line-up against Ikorodu City FC on Matchday Two. Oloye Felix started at left-back ahead of Kingsley Akpan, Anas Hassan replaced Saheed Obisesan in midfield while Gideon Monday was favoured ahead of Uwem Charles.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half

A slow and cagey opening quarter of the game was played out, with both teams having a sight of goal from a set-piece.

Saviour Isaac had a go at goal from a free-kick that went inches wide, before the home side also attempted one which went miles off the target.

Minutes later, the referee made a big call that could have changed the complexion of the game when a Gateway defender deliberately elbowed Etiti Solomon on his face, but the referee could only issue a yellow to the culprit.

Minutes later, Gateway United forward Jamiu had a chance to open  scoring but met a determined Obinna Akuchie in our goal to deny him.

A flurry of opportunities in a sequence of play brought about chances as the game began to open up. Gateway's Samuel Akintola had a shot at goal which was tipped off-target by Obinna unto the crossbar.

At the other end, Olalekan Abdulsalam had a chance on the edge of the box to test their goalkeeper but his shot was parried out for a corner kick.

Obinna ensured another attempt from a freekick from Akintola was well saved to keep scores level heading into halftime.

As the game was beginning to be stretched, the centre referee in a bizarre manner ended the first half with the clock reading 43 minutes, to the amazement of the coaches and spectators watching on.

Second Half

The second half started with the home side in front inside two minutes, benefitting from a defensive blunder involving Opara Abraham and his partner, Bassey Odiong.

A freekick on the centre circle was awarded to the home side after Saviour was said to bring down his opponent with a minimal touch, the resulting freekick was sent long into our box with no Gateway player seen near the ball, but Opara failed to clear,  while Bassey was ball-watching as Salifu Aruna snuck in to beat Obinna at close range.

The goal changed the dynamics of the game completely. Coach Makinwa immediately withdrew Opara for Owolabi Ibrahim, in the first of substitutions to follow.

More attacking substitutions followed - Gideon went off for Uwem Charles, while Kingsley Akpan replaced Etiti, as the Lions searched for an equalizer.

Substitute Kingsley failed to connect with the ball from Saviour's long cross at the far post on the 78th minute, and Lekan was nearly rewarded after he pressed and harried Gateway defenders to cease possession in their box, but the goalkeeper came to the rescue.

The game ended after the three additional minutes elapsed, despite the time-wasting antics by the home side.

WHAT NEXT

With two points from the opening three matches, Coach Makinwa is still in search of his first victory in the NNL, and next leads the Champions of Lagos out against Osun United on Friday, March 4, 2022, at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
