MAKINWA: IKOT EKPENE IS LIKE HOME FOR US

Vandrezzer FC will return to Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium for the first time in over two years - 895 days after recording a 2-1 win over Joy Cometh FC in our last home game the Lions’ former home ground.

Aberico Da Silva and Ekerete Udom were on the scoresheet for the Lions on Saturday, December 22, 2019 - their last game before the 2019/2020 league season was truncated.

The Champions of Lagos have been in a scintillating form since the commencement of the second stanza of the league in May, winning all three matches last month and setting a new club record of consecutive victories.

With the in-form Lions sitting comfortably in third position, our Head Coach Henry Makinwa says the run has lifted the spirit and boosted the morale of players.

“Last month was lovely and great for the lads”, Makinwa told VFC Media during the team’s training session in Ikot Ekpene on Friday.

“We’ve been able to win three straight games now, that’s good for the morale, concentration and the confidence of the boys. I want to thank the management for the support given to the team to enable us achieve this feat.”

The meeting between the two sides in March ended in a 1-1 draw at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, despite the Lions taking the lead in that game. Makinwa understands the task at stake which is to win on Saturday.

He also believes his side is ready while stating the game will be like a home game for the Lions.

“The expectation is the three points that are at stake, but we know it would be a tough game. However we are ready tactically, technically, and physically. We are playing home, Ikot Ekpene is like home for us and we have been able to tune the mentality of the boys to believe that. This is a derby, and Ibom Youths is a good side considering their position on the table. We expect a great game and the boys certainly know what is at stake.”

Third-placed Vandrezzer FC will take the short trip of 28km by road from the team’s training base in Uyo, to the Rafia City where they face fourth-placed Ibom Youths at 16:00hrs GMT.
