We began our build up to the new season with a 0-1 loss to Abia Warriors, in a friendly played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on Friday evening.
How it happened
Abia Warriors started the friendly match strongly, dominating play in the first ten minutes which eventually led to the first goal and only goal: Bello Lukman capitalized from a goal mouth scramble with a neat tap in the 10th minute.
The Lions roared back into the game with Alberico Da Silva almost getting the equalizer in the 35th minute following good team play involving Kola Daniel and David Mark who found Alberico with a perfect cross. The midfielder's first time shot beat Abia Warriors goalkeeper but the effort was blocked off the line by a defender.
Alberico again had the chance to equalize in the 38th minute with a freekick just outside the penalty area after Daniel was fouled. This time, his shot was millimeters off target.
The Lions went into the break a goal down, but missed a glorious chance just after the restart. Striker Victor Akra pounded on a poor pass from Abia Warriors goalkeeper, but had his shot saved by the goalkeeper.
We would threaten again before the end, but Abia Warriors kept their shape and defended well till the final whistle.
Coach Rafael Everton will hope to get the best out of his team with more friendly matches before the start of the new season, and in his words "with more of such games, we sure would blend."
A VFC sponsored pre-season tournament is expected to be announced in the coming days.
