Vandrezzer FC progressed to the quarter-finals of this year’s Lagos FA Cup after our 6-5 penalty shootout victory over 36 Lion FC on Wednesday afternoon.

Coach Tony Bolus maintained the same starting line up for the Round of 16 game against Jo Sportyne FC last weekend.

VFC were up against a very physical 36 Lion side who defended well to deny our attackers time and space on the ball.  Forward Olalekan was however able to find a bit of space twice, but headed slightly over the 36 Lion goal.

Winger Gideon Monday was also busy upfront making lovely runs behind the defenders, but the forward was heavily guarded with heavy tackles. Substitute Elisha who also came in for Chukwuebuka in the final fifteen minutes also made some good runs which were thwarted by the 36 Lion defence.

With the two sides cancelling out each other throughout the 90 minutes, the tie went on to be decided via penalty shootout.

Assistant coach Yemi Daniel who stood in for an ill Tony Bolus, had made an 88th minute change with the shootout in mind, bringing on Paul Emenike in place of new signing Obinna Akuchie Jr. Paul eventually made an excellent save in the shootout to help VFC progress.

Just before the Emenike save, Saheed Obisesan missed our opening kick. However Olalekan Abdulsalam, Gideon Monday and Captain Samuel Edoho scored before Kabiru Popoola missed to extend the kick beyond the initial five. Elisha Jonah, Kingsley Akpan and Saviour Isaac all scored the remaining kicks, while 36 Lion missed three spot kicks in total to send us through to the last 8.

VFC will face Messiah FC in the quarterfinals, after the amateur clubside defeated May FC this evening, also via penalty shootout.

The match is billed to take place on Saturday Dec. 11 or Sunday December 12, 2021. The precise date and time for the fixture is subject to draws to be decided tomorrow Thursday, December 9, 2021.
