Everything you need to know about Vandrezzer FC’s Nigeria National League (NNL) Matchday 19 fixture against Osun United on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at the OAU Stadium, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The Lions are passing through a difficult spell of four games without a win. A goalless draw against Abeokuta Stormers in Lagos last weekend, a defeat against Adoration FC in Enugu, followed another goalless home draw against J. Atete and the derby loss to Ibom Youths FC in Ikot Ekpene.
The disappointing form in June comes after the Lions’ 100% record in May - winning all three of their matches in that month.
Currently placed 5th in the Group B1 table, the Champions of Lagos are yet to find the back of the net this month after scoring six times in the previous month.
VFC have 25 points - 9 below table toppers Bendel Insurance and 5 ahead of today’s opponents Osun United, who occupy 11th spot in the 12-team group, with 20 points.
Osun are also struggling for points, winning just one of their last five (against Adoration on May 28); with three defeats and a draw between the losses. During this spell they have scored 5 goals and have conceded 10 - the most recent coming from their 4-0 drubbing by Ikorodu United in Lagos last weekend.
In total Osun have lost ten, drawn two and won six times this season (all home wins).
HEAD TO HEAD
The Lions lead their hosts 2-1 on head to head aggregate. Saturday’s meeting will be the fourth between VFC and Osun - the first two were in the 2021 NNL season, while the third encounter was earlier this season.
A controversial 2-1 win by Osun in Osogbo on March 6, 2021, which led to a ban imposed on the home side; preceded a 2-0 home win by VFC on June 16, with goals from Saheed Obisesan and Kolawole Daniel.
The last meeting was a spectacular 4-2 home win for the Lions on February 4, 2022. Two goals from man of the match Samuel Edoho in either side of the half, a Bassey Odiong flick-in and a stoppage time strike from Oloye Felix, ensured the Lions came out tops in the six-goal thriller.
Twenty Lions made the trip to Ile-Ife, with coach Henry Makinwa looking forward to having the best options as the team filed out in his alma matter (Obafemi Awolowo University) later this afternoon.
Coach Makinwa would be hoping his strikers eventually find their scoring boots this month, with returnee Somtochukwu Abraham, Olalekan Abdulsalam, Gideon Monday and Golden Udo-Iyang all included in the Matchday squad.
Meanwhile, Uwem Charles remains out for the second game running (dropped for Somtochukwu), while Etiti Solomon and Victor Akra are still serving club suspension for acts of indiscipline.
